CLIENT EXPERIENCE

Though every Hammond Editions project is different, with its own special requirements, the collaborative process of creating a unique book tends to follow a similar sequence of events.
  1. Initial meeting with client to discuss the purpose and general idea of the book and specifics of the project: the size of the book, the number of pages, and the probable costs. Photography, text, design, and printing will be broadly discussed and followed by a detailed estimate of overall costs according to the ideas discussed in the initial meeting.
  2. Client will meet with the photographer and the designer to discuss in greater detail the project. This will include everything from scheduling to the artistic tone of the book. Hammond Editions will submit a confirmation of the detailed description of the book, an estimate of expenses, and a contract.
  3. Upon approval of the book proposal, client will sign a contract and submit a $10,000 expense deposit, at which point the photography will begin. Client will be billed monthly for all fees and expenses, to be paid within 30 days.
  4. Photographer and designer review and assess the photographs, then hone, edit, and prepare work prints. Other components (maps, histories, family trees, text) undertaken as needed.
  5. Client reviews work prints and approves and/or amends direction of the photography.
  6. Final photography is completed and edited. Work prints are presented, for client approval. Photographer and designer begin the sequencing, pacing, and general look of the book.
  7. Present color layouts for 3-4 sample spreads and end papers. Layouts will show treatment for overall grid/layout, photography, illustration, typography (text, captions and heads), color palette and production techniques. Client provides feedback.
  8. Writer submits drafts of text and illustrator submits renderings. Client provides feedback.
  9. Present layouts based on the client's feedback; show all necessary pagination plans and additional spreads, as needed. Writer and Illustrator submit revised work. Client provides final approval. Client provides another 25% of the estimated budget upon approvals.
  10. Designer refines the look of the book; flow type, format, and final text into approved design; and provide first set of pages showing the position, sizing and placement of all photography, text and illustrations.
  11. Photographer and designer present 2-3 cover concepts. Client approves one concept for further refinement. Final cover design presented for client approval.
  12. Present page proofs of layout to client. Input a final round of minor text changes (no change to layout/images) and prepare electronic files.
  13. Photographer and designer meet with the production team (printer) to discuss and supervise color; approve printing proofs; then oversee printing, cutting, and binding of the book. Client will provide 50% of the proposed printing and binding budget prior to printing. Client will be billed as additional expenses occur.
  14. Upon delivery of one finished book the job client will make a balance payment followed by a final payment for any outstanding expenses.
  15. Hammond Editions makes delivery of finished book(s).
