THE PROCESS

Shaped by the eye of the photographer and the designer, a unique book carries the past and present to the future - a window into your world.

DESIGN

Our books are designed by Yolanda Cuomo of Cuomo Design.

Art director and innovative designer, Ms. Cuomo has collaborated for over two decades with visual and performing artists such as Richard Avedon, Twyla Tharp, Paul Simon and Laurie Anderson. Her studio designed the worldwide exhibition and book Diane Arbus: Revelations. Other books include: Pre-Pop Warhol, September 11 by Magnum photographers, A House Like Me, Kenneth Cole - Footnotes, and Irish Travellers, Tinkers No More by Alen MacWeeney.

PAPER SELECTION

Because there is such a wide range of archival fine art papers in various surface textures and tonalities of white and off-white, the selection is usually determined after the photographs are completed.

PRINTING

We employ three printing methods to achieve the highest quality results. They are:

Archival pigment ink printing on fine art papers treated with an ink-receptive coating is, in our opinion, the state-of-the-art process for rich, luminous and brilliant printing of our small edition books (1-20 copies). It features superb detail and tonality, with exceptionally deep blacks. Additionally, each page is sprayed to ensure against environmental influences.

Offset: This process is often used for editions of more than 100 copies. It features consistency, and sharp, clean, full-color images for faithful reproduction of fine art, photography, and manuscripts.

Letterpress: This process is unsurpassed at fine typography and results in the crispest lettering and embossing. It is used by many small presses that produce handmade limited-edition artists' books.

BINDING

Hammond Editions binds books entirely by hand, employing techniques virtually unchanged for 300 years. Only the finest archival materials are used, from hand-tanned leather to 100% cotton rag paper. More than thirty steps go into binding a book. It begins with the paper being cut, folded and hand-sewn together to become the text block; it ends with embossing, in precious metal, a signature or a hand-tooled design on a leather or fabric cover.

CASES AND FOLDING BOXES

Each book is either handsomely slipcased or comes in a folding box covered in fine linen, leather, or unique materials. We work closely with each client to select the slipcase / box material, structure, and design.
